There’s lots to think about when planning a new bathroom, so we’ve compiled a step-by-step guide to help you along the way.

1 - WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE?

If you’re seriously considering renovating your bathroom, there’s probably a good reason why you want to do so. Are you looking to update an outdated bathroom to the newest bathroom design trends? Or perhaps you’ve just moved in somewhere and the layout of the bathroom is just not working for you? Or have you planned an extension and need to start from scratch? All these different scenarios will subtly change the way you approach your bathroom renovation. You’ll be able to follow each of these steps in our bathroom remodel checklist regardless of what you want to change, but it is a good idea to know exactly what you’re planning to do, and where your priorities lie before starting. You never know where you’ll have to make compromises and knowing that your focus is on a certain colour scheme or on updating the fixtures will help make decisions down the line.

2 - GET INSPIRED

This is one of the most fun steps of bathroom renovation – the inspiration! Just like when you’re writing something (a story, an email, an application), don’t edit before you’ve collected ideas! Which ideas will work for your space will become clear once you’ve collected lots of them and decided on your favourite ones – that’s when you can start to be a bit more realistic. 3 - TAKE MEASUREMENTS

Once you’ve got plenty of ideas, measure out your space to see what is realistically possible. If you’ve got a small bathroom, you can think about optimising your space, too. If you’ve got a large space that you want to remodel, make sure you measure out the space for bigger projects, like new windows or a new walk-in shower.

4 - DRAFT A LAYOUT

So, you’ve got your measurements and some inspiration. Things are really starting to come together! The next step is to think about a layout. There is software that can help you draft a layout of your space with the measurements you took to help visualise it. You can, of course, use pen and paper to achieve the same thing, as long as you’re precise with your measurements.

If you’re planning a new bath or shower, make sure you’ve taken the measurements for that, too. Once you’re happy with the layout of your bathroom and all the components have their spot, you can proceed to the next step!

5 - MAKE A BUDGET

You’ll probably already have a good idea of what it costs to buy any new fixtures and fittings because you’ll have measured your space accordingly. However, installation and fitting costs can take up a lot of your budget, so get in touch with a few professionals and ask for a quote. This will help you get an overview of how much it costs to renovate a bathroom.

6 - LET THE PROS GET TO WORK

By planning your budget well, you’ll automatically have the contact details for the professionals who will help you renovate your space. If you need their help, now it’s time to make the call and watch your project come to life! Obviously if you choose to carry out the renovations yourself, then you can skip this step.
